Microsclerotherapy: What it is, and why winter is the best time

Microsclerotherapy is a well-established treatment used to improve the appearance of spider veins on the legs. These are the fine red, blue, or purple veins that can develop over time and often become more noticeable with age, pregnancy, or prolonged standing.

How does the Treatment work?

The treatment itself involves placing a very small amount of a medical solution directly into the vein using a fine needle. This causes the vein to close down, and over time, with the help of compression, your body naturally clears it away. The result is a gradual softening and fading of those visible veins, leaving the skin looking clearer and more even.

This in-clinic treatment is generally well tolerated. Most people return to normal daily activities straight after, but there is one important part of the process that really influences your outcome, and that’s compression.

What happens after treatment?

After treatment, you’ll be required to wear compression stockings for a period of time. This helps support the veins as they heal, improves circulation, and ultimately gives you a better result. It’s also the reason winter is the ideal time to treat. Wearing compression in cooler weather is far more comfortable, and reduced sun exposure lowers the risk of pigmentation during the healing phase.

When will I see results?

Results don’t happen overnight. You’ll usually start to notice improvement over a few weeks, and depending on the area, more than one session will likely be recommended. It’s also worth noting that while we can treat existing veins, your body can still form new ones over time, so maintenance is often part of a longer-term plan.

As with anything we do in clinic, it starts with a proper assessment. Not all veins are suitable for microsclerotherapy, and occasionally further investigation is needed to make sure we’re treating safely and appropriately.

When performed correctly, microsclerotherapy is an effective option for managing superficial leg veins. You may experience some temporary redness, bruising, or mild swelling, but these are generally short-lived.
